For years, I was caught in a relentless cycle of managing classroom behavior, experimenting with new strategies, and struggling to keep students engaged—leaving me drained and unsatisfied. I knew I had to find a sustainable path in education or consider leaving the profession altogether.

If you feel overwhelmed or exhausted from trying to motivate your students, I get it—I’ve been there too. But I didn’t stay there.

In the fall of 2011, a professional development workshop changed everything for me. A presenter said, ‘We’re good at telling kids what they are doing, but not at telling them what they are learning.” This insight hit home and made me realize that I wasn’t truly supporting my students because I didn’t fully understand what they were learning.

This realization changed my approach to teaching, especially in physical education.

The days of simply getting kids moving and facilitating play were behind me. I took an unconventional path in PE, diving into the world of assessment, grading, and student motivation. Through this journey, I discovered powerful connections between these areas, profoundly transforming both my teaching and my students’ experiences in ways I had never imagined.

Since then, I’ve dedicated my career to transforming how we approach teaching and learning in PE. I now support teachers, schools, and districts across North America, sharing evidence-based strategies that foster deeper student engagement, meaningful assessment, and effective grading practices.

Today, I’m recognized as a trusted expert in these areas, leading impactful professional learning experiences designed to elevate student achievement and empower educators. I’ve been recognized at the provincial, national, and international levels for my leadership efforts, and I also work with Solution Tree as an Assessment Associate.
